Oneonta, NY : A passenger car ran into a dump truck on May, Thursday, 18th 2017
A passenger car ran into a dump truck Thursday morning in Delhi, killing the car's driver.
The names of the drivers were being withheld Thursday evening pending notification of the family, Delaware County Undersheriff Craig DuMond said.
The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. just north of Elk Creek Road on state Route 10, with a passenger car traveling north and a dump truck from LaFever Excavating loaded with gravel traveling south, DuMond said.
The initial call was for a head-on collision with a vehicle on fire, he said. When the fire department and other first responders arrived, they found the dump truck in flames on its side in a southside ditch. The truck's driver was able to get out of the vehicle, but the driver of the car was declared dead at the scene by county Medical Examiner James Cooros, DuMond said.
Witnesses said the passenger car swerved into the path of the dump truck, and the driver of the dump truck did all he could to avoid the collision, DuMond said. The truck driver was taken to O’Connor Hospital in Delhi, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Route 10 was closed for several hours following the crash, DuMond said. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the state police accident reconstruction unit, the Delhi Fire Department and emergency medical services responded as well as the county Department of Emergency Services, DuMond said.
