Sioux City, IA : Hinton man injured after a crash involving city transit bus early Tuesday, November 15, 2016
A Hinton, Iowa, man was hospitalized early Tuesday after rescue crews mechanically extricated him from his sport utility vehicle following a collision with a Sioux City Transit bus.
The incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. at Business Highway 75 and Outer Drive.
According to a news release from the Sioux City Police Department, 26-year-old Chad Plante, of Hinton, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe south on Highway 75 when it collided with a Sioux City Transit bus making a left turn onto Outer Drive from the northbound Highway 75 lanes.
The release said the transit bus went off the road to the southwest, crashing through a chain-link fence. Plante's vehicle was turned onto its side.
Sioux City Fire Rescue mechanically extricated Plante from his vehicle, and he was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City. Police said his injuries were significant but "not believed to be life-threatening at this time."
A Mercy representative did not have information on Plante's condition Tuesday afternoon.
The operator of the transit bus, 39-year-old Jamie Pica, of Sioux City, was transported by ambulance to UnityPoint Health -- St. Luke's, the release said. No passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident, according to the release.
Police diverted traffic from the area for several hours Tuesday morning while a Sioux City police technical investigator processed the scene.
The incident remains under investigation. Charges are pending based on the investigation's outcome.
