Decatur, AL : Lacey's Spring motorcyclist dies in fatal crash on Morgan County Tuesday October 18th 2016.
Authorities have identified the victim of Tuesday’s fatal crash near Cherokee as a Morgan County man.
Senior Trooper Johnathan Appling, a public information officer with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, said Wednesday morning that Richard Lewis Todd, 27, Lacey's Spring, was killed in the crash that took place around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 72 near Cherokee in Colbert County.
Appling said Todd was traveling east on a 2003 Honda motorcycle that collided with a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Larry Charles Houston, 83, Cherokee. Houston was not injured.
Todd was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred on U.S. 72 at the intersection of Maple Street. Emergency personnel said Houston was traveling west on U.S. 72 and was attempting to turn south onto Maple Street when the crash happened.
The accident is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Quad-Cities Trooper Post.
Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley pronounced Todd dead at the scene. He said Todd's body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy.
Emergency personnel at the scene said the victim and his motorcycle ended up off the roadway. Authorities at the scene said the motorcycle was more than 100 feet from the collision while victim ended up 95 feet from the point of impact.
Cherokee Police Chief Jason Williamson helped work traffic at the accident. He said the eastbound lane was not completely closed, but they did have to close the outside lane, while emergency crews worked and law enforcement collected evidence from the crash.
