Seguin, TX : 3-vehicle wreck shuts down I-10 on Thursday, December, 7th 2017
A three-vehicle collision shut the highway down for several hours on Thursday.
Police responded to the scene of a crash, reported about 10:10 a.m., in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the 603 mile marker after an 18-wheeler hauling cars overturned.
Seguin Police spokesman Officer Carlos Contreras said the wreck happened as the big rig, loaded with several cars, attempted to avoid a collision with a car merging onto the freeway
“A vehicle was entering the highway from U.S. (Highway) 90 came up and did not yield the right of way,” he said. “That caused the car hauler to try to move over quickly to avoid a collision.”
However, in doing so, the back end of the trailer fell onto its side, causing the rest of the trailer and truck to do the same, Contreras said.
The 18-wheeler also hit a white sports utility vehicle and a white four-door sedan, although it’s unknown at this time when or how the three collided, Contreras said.
One person was taken to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, Contreras said.
Due to the scope of the collision, and because it was spread across a majority of the road, first responders shut down the highway for almost four hours to safely remove the 18-wheeler and two passenger vehicles, Contreras said.
“We wanted to be careful because of the size of the vehicles and didn’t want to cause any further accidents,” he said. “We wanted to give officers and tow truck drivers enough room to work safely.”
This is the second major wreck this week to shut down the highway for several hours.
On Tuesday morning, a collision involving three 18-wheelers forced officials to close Interstate 10 for nearly 12 hours in order to clear the wrecked tractor-trailers and repair the road.
