Authorities said a Tennessee man was killed Saturday night when he was thrown through the windshield of a truck that ran off the road and down an embankment near Second Creek Bridge west of Rogersville.

Emergency personnel at the scene said the truck ran off the north side of the roadway just east of the bridge.

Deputy Lauderdale County Coroner Mike Bishop identified the victim as Jonathan Wade Gooch, 28, 55 Marks Branch Road, Leoma, Tennessee.

Officials at the scene said Gooch was thrown through the windshield of the 1977 GMC truck he was driving. His body was found about 50 feet from the truck.

Authorities said the passenger in the truck, a 21-year-old Leoma woman, was injured and flown from the scene to Huntsville Hospital.

Her condition was not known, but emergency personnel at the scene said she crawled out of the wreckage. They said she was alert and talking before she left in the air ambulance.

Emergency personnel said it is likely that Gooch was dead upon impact.

Bishop pronounced him dead at the scene. He said Gooch died from massive blunt force trauma to the head.

"It was evident he had quite an impact (from the wreck)," Bishop said.

The wreck was reported to Lauderdale 911 officials at 10:34 p.m. Saturday.

Reports indicate the truck was traveling west on U.S. 72 when it ran off the roadway just before it got to the bridge at Second Creek.

Officials at the scene said the truck was 30 to 35 feet down the embankment.

The fatality is the 29th this year in the Northwest Alabama region and the southern Tennessee counties of Wayne and Lawrence.

The fatal crash is the third in a week. Two others took place Aug. 5 -- one in Colbert County and one in Lauderdale County.

Saturday night's accident remains under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Quad-Cities State Troopers.
