PLYMOUTH TWP, PA : Historical marker damaged in crash on Saturday, January, 20th 2018

The Plymouth Historical Society wants to replace a historical marker recognizing the Avondale Mine Disaster that was damaged after a vehicle collided with the sign.

A driver hit the sign early on Jan. 20, said society president Steve Kondrad.

“It snapped the base right off,” he said.

State police told him the driver has insurance, and Kondrad is hoping that will be able to pay for a new marker.

A new sign will likely cost a few thousand dollars, he said. The marker is about three feet wide, is made of cast aluminum and is quite heavy.

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is in charge of historical markers that commemorate a number of notable people, events and places.

The Avondale Mine Disaster occurred on Sept. 6, 1869 when a mine fire killed 108 men and boys as well as two people trying to rescue the trapped miners.
