Los Angeles, CA : 3 killed, 1 injured when car veers off 405 transition road near LAX on Saturday, July 30, 2016
Three Inland Empire residents were fatally injured and another was hospitalized after their car struck a concrete column off the 405 Freeway near Los Angeles International Airport, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.
The driver, Aldo Noe Acosta Verdin, 19, of Moreno Valley, and an unidentified 24-year-old woman from San Bernardino were killed at the scene of the accident at 7:50 a.m. Saturday, the CHP said.
An unidentified 16-year-old girl from Moreno Valley died later at County-Harbor UCLA Medical Center. A third passenger, Devin Armani Thomas, 19, of Moreno Valley, was taken to the same hospital with major injuries, the CHP said.
The CHP said Verdin was believed to have been speeding in a 2008 Toyota Scion XB when he failed to make a curve on the collector road that leads traffic back onto the southbound 405 near Century Boulevard.
The Scion veered off the road and into a dirt embankment. The car struck the concrete column that holds the transition road of the southbound 405 to the westbound 105 Freeway, the CHP said. The vehicle spun, with the roof lying against the column and the front end pointing down.
Verdin was not wearing a seat belt, the CHP said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
