McPherson, KS : Two people killed in McPherson County crash on Wednesday evening, June 15, 2016

Two people were killed Wednesday evening when their car hydroplaned on a wet highway before striking a semi-trailer in McPherson County in central Kansas, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 6:57 p.m. on US-56 highway just west of 2nd Road, about 10 miles west of McPherson.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala was traveling west on US-56 when it hydroplaned and crossed into the eastbound lane.

A 2009 Freightliner semi eastbound on the highway then struck the right rear side of the Impala, which came to rest in the south ditch facing north.

Two people in the Impala were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Nicholas A. Schwarz, 21, of Lyons, and Rebecca J. Deist, 19, of McPherson. Both were wearing their seat belts, the patrol said.

The semi driver, Douglas L. Caskey, 56, of Grand Island, Neb., wasn’t injured. The patrol said Caskey was wearing his seat belt.
