Arcanum, OH : One person died and five injured in a head-on crash on Arcanum Bears Mill Road at Painter Creek Arcanum Road in Darke County on Saturday, Oct 3, 2015

One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Darke County.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Arcanum Bears Mill Road at Painter Creek-Arcanum Road.

Deputies with the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said 76 year old Darlene Cook of Pitsburg, Ohio was traveling north along Arcanum Bears Mill Road in a blue sedan when she collided with a gold-colored vehicle heading in the opposite direction.

Witnesses told deputies Cook veered left of center and remained in the wrong lane for an extended period of time.

“It’s so early in the investigation we have no information or explanation as to why she chose to go the wrong direction,” said Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker.

Cook was killed in the crash. Five people in the other vehicle were taken to area hospitals with moderate to severe injuries.

“Two of the five in the gold car had to be extracted by mechanical means by fire and rescue personnel,” said Whittaker.

Arcanum Bears Mill Road between State Route 49 and State Route 571 was shut down while officials investigate and worked to clear the scene.
