Sacramento, CA : Standing by her car after collision, Delhi woman killed in second crash on Wednesday, November 30th, 2016
Moments after being in a collision Wednesday morning, a Delhi resident was standing by her disabled vehicle when another driver came along and was unable to avoid hitting her car. The impact of the second collision knocked the woman's car into her, and she became pinned beneath it.
The woman, identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office as Socorro Hernandez, 44, was pronounced dead a short time later at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
The first crash happened about 5:45 a.m. Hernandez was driving her 1992 Honda north on Montpelier Road when for an unknown reason she veered into the southbound lane and into the path of a 2008 Kia driven by 35-year-old Estaban Marquez of Modesto.Marquez hit his brakes and swerved to the right to avoid the crash, but the vehicles hit head-on, the California Highway Patrol reported. Hernandez's Honda came to rest facing east and blocking the northbound lane of Montpelier within the intersection at Monte Vista Avenue. Marquez's Kia ended up on the dirt shoulder of Montpelier. He suffered major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center, the CHP said.
Hernandez got out of her car and was standing on the driver side, in the intersection. Winton resident Jose Barrajas, 26, was driving his 1994 Toyota north on Montpelier, approaching the intersection at 45-50 mph, the CHP said.
When he saw the Honda blocking his lane, he applied his brakes but was unable to avoid hitting its passenger side. The impact pushed the Honda north, knocking Hernandez to the ground. The vehicle came to rest atop her, the CHP said.
