Wesley McKay, 41, the first-year boys’ basketball coach at Wheeler High School, died Friday night after being struck by a vehicle in Hampton, Georgia, near Atlanta.
McKay, a former Shannon and Thrasher girls coach, is the brother of former Baldwyn boys coach Jason McKay.
A vehicle driven by a Henry County, Georgia resident traveling north on State Route 41/19 near its intersection with Woolsey Road, collided with McKay as he and a friend, both on foot, attempted to cross the northbound lanes of State Route 41/19 about 11:45 p.m. Friday to get to the Waffle House, said Henry County police spokesman Lt. Joey Smith.
McKay was pronounced dead at the scene by Henry County Coroner Donald Cleveland at 12:15 a.m. Saturday.
There was no indication that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Smith said, and the collision is still under investigation.
