The roof of the white mini-van that was submerged in a pond in a Maricopa neighborhood.
It was around nine this morning when the driver for some reason veered off the road and ended up underwater. Firefighters and a good samaritan jumped into the frigid water to rescue the two women in the van.
"Was more than willing to help, jumped in the water, it was a bit cold, but you know your adrenaline keeps you going to do what you have to do to help someone," said Eric Schafroth. Schafroth was driving with his wife, taking their daughter to school when he saw a woman on the roof of the van in the middle of the pond.
He used to be a volunteer firefighter and has EMT training.
"I found there was a second person in the vehicle, and I jumped in to assist and pull the one out, and then pulled the second out and just sort of stood by them until more help got here. It is just kind of what I learned and what I did," he said.
It's still unclear how the van ended up going off course, and while the driver appears to be okay, her passenger; a woman in her 50's was not responsive when taken from the scene.
"In a situation like this the officers reacted along with the fire department, and even a bystander to do what I hope every normal person would do; is to try and save a life," said Maricopa Police spokesperson Ricardo Alvarado.
