LOVES PARK, IL : National Guard member killed in I-90 crash identified on Monday, 26th March 2018
Sgt. Marcos Gudino, 30, of Elgin, was identified Monday by the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office as the National Guard member who died Sunday following a rollover crash on Interstate 90.
Illinois State Police and North Park firefighters responded at 11:13 a.m. to a report of an eastbound military vehicle driven off the roadway and rolling down an embankment with individuals lying on the ground. The accident occurred 2 miles south of state Route 173.
Gudino and another guardsman, whose name has not been released, were taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
Gudino was pronounced dead at 11:52 a.m. An autopsy showed the preliminary cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head due to a motor vehicle collision.
The other guardsman, who was identified as the driver, suffered serious injuries and is listed as stable.
Monday afternoon, the Illinois National Guard issued a statement identifying Gudino as a sergeant assigned to Headquarters Co., 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment based in Chicago.
“The thoughts and prayers of the entire organization are with Sergeant Gudino’s family and friends, and the soldiers who were closest to him,” said Maj. Gen. Richard J. Hayes, adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard.
Gudino served as a medic since enlisting in August of 2010. His military ambulance was part of a small convoy of vehicles returning from weekend training at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.
Gudino graduated from St. Edwards Central Catholic High School in 2006 and was a recipient of the Illinois National Guard’s Army Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal.
When Gudino wasn’t serving his country, he was employed as an auto salesman for McGrath Honda first in Elgin and later in St. Charles, said McGrath General Manager Dustin Johnson.
“He was a good salesman,” Johnson said. “He was good with people. The guy loved the gym. He would go there before work and after.”
The accident is under investigation.
