Martinez,CA : Teen driver falls asleep and hits electric pole on April, sunday 30th 2017
A teenage boy walked away without any injuries after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing a vehicle into a power pole early Sunday, police said.
The 17-year-old lost control of the vehicle around 3:15 a.m. and slammed into the pole, bringing it down along with some electrical lines and knocking out power to parts of Martinez, Pleasant Hill and Concord, police said. Despite everything, the boy was fine.
“He’s very lucky,” Martinez police Sgt. Steve Gaul said.
The crash left 1,975 PG&E customers initially, but crews had restored it to all but 197 people by 10 a.m. Sunday morning, company spokeswoman Jacqueline Ratto said. The customers affected Sunday morning were near Blue Ridge Drive in Martinez and Gregory Lane in Pleasant Hill.
Police had no indication the teen had been drinking or under the influence of drugs, Sgt. Patrick Salamid said. They later released him to his parents.
The crash shut down north- and southbound Alhambra Avenue between Devon Avenue and Virginia Hills Drive, but the northbound direction was back open Sunday morning. The road is expected to be open around the time repairs are finished, Gaul said, and Ratto said PG&E hopes to have full power restored by 6 p.m. Check back for updates.
