Manteno, IL : Five injured in a single-vehicle crash on Rt. 50 near Manteno on Thursday, January 1, 2015

A single-vehicle accident along Illinois Route 50 near Manteno at 6800N Road sent five people to area hospitals, one being air-lifted to a Chicago-area hospital, a fire official said.

The accident at 6:03 p.m. Thursday resulted in all four lanes of the highway between 2000E Road and 5000N Road being closed by Illinois State Police.

Details of the accident were not available from the Illinois State Police.

Manteno Fire Chief Scott O'Brien said this morning that in addition to Manteno, firefighters from Bradley and Bourbonnais also assisted.

Although information regarding this accident was not available, this area along Route 50 has long been a troubled location for serious accidents, many of them resulting in fatalities.

From 6000N Road to 12000N Road, there had been eight fatal crashes between 2006 and late 2012.

These intersections have been viewed as dangerous by Kankakee County transportation officials, in large part because of the elevation and angle at which the roads feed into the four-lane highway. In addition, there are railroad tracks nearby.
