Sacramento, CA : Roseville man driving wrong way kills 3 on I-80 in Sacramento early Saturday morning, January 10, 2015
The California Highway Patrol said three people were killed by a wrong-way driver on eastbound Interstate 80 in Sacramento early Saturday morning.
Officers said Aaron Jordon Caudillo, 24, of Roseville, was driving a Chrysler 300 the wrong way at about 2:10 a.m. on I-80 west of Madison Avenue when his vehicle crashed head-on with a Buick Regal in the inside lane.
All three people inside the Buick -- including Roseville resident Matt Azar, 20, who was the driver, Granite Bay resident Kendra Langham, 18, and Mathew Beardwitt, 18 -- were killed upon impact, CHP said.
A friend of Azar's said they were driving home from a concert in the Sacramento area when they were hit.
Langham and Beardwitt both worked at a Taco Bell in Granite Bay. Their manager described them as clean-cut, cheerful, workers who kept morale up at the fast food restaurant.
"I used to call them quick like bunnies because they would just hippity hop. They were always really really fast. I was really proud of them," Nancy Fernandez said.
Caudillo was taken to Mercy San Juan to be treated for his injuries and is expected to survive, according to CHP.
Investigators said Caudillo was not only driving a black vehicle, but did not have his lights on, which may have allowed Azar more time to try and avoid the oncoming vehicle.
Three lanes on I-80 near Madison Avenue were closed for a number of hours and finally reopened at about 5:30 a.m.
CHP said they suspect drugs or alcohol played a factor, but are still investigating.
All four people involved in the crash were wearing their seat belts.
