Chico, CA : One hurt in head-on Skyway crash near Chico on Tuesday afternoon, March 28, 2017
One person was hurt and taken to a hospital following a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon on Skyway near Chico.
The accident happened about 12:45 p.m. when the driver of a Ford Taurus, Olmeda Weatherbie, 75, of Magalia, pulled onto Skyway from Spanish Garden Drive, driving into the path of a westbound Chrysler PT Cruiser, said Sgt. Brian Donnelly of the California Highway Patrol.
The two cars collided and a passenger in the PT Cruiser, Felicia Castaneda, 53, of Magalia, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance, said Logan Callahan, an officer for the CHP.
The driver of the PT Cruiser, Steven Jones, 62, of Magalia, was not hurt, Callahan said.
A witness to the crash told officers it appeared Weatherbie, the driver of the Ford, first intended to turn from Spanish Garden to westbound Skyway but hesitated, Donnelly said.
Weatherbie then instead attempted to cross the westbound lanes of Skyway toward eastbound Skyway when she drove into the path of the PT Cruiser, colliding in the westbound fast lane.
Weatherbie wasn’t hurt.
Neither drugs nor alcohol was suspected to be a factor in the crash, Donnelly said.
Both cars sustained significant damage and required a tow.
