Communities across two different states are in mourning following the deaths of an Indiana University student and her mother in a fiery crash on Interstate 275 this weekend.
Elaine Ludwig, 59, and her 18-year-old daughter Amanda Ludwig, both of Cincinnati, suffered fatal injuries shortly before noon Saturday when a semi-tractor trailer collided with their Pontiac Grand Prix in the westbound lanes of the Carroll C. Cropper Bridge. It was not far from the Kentucky and Indiana border.
The Grand Prix was traveling westbound when it came to a stop on the bridge in the right lane, Boone County Sheriff's Office spokesman Tom Scheben said in a release. Scheben said a semi driver following behind was able to swerve to his left and avoid hitting the car. But a second semi wasn't able to stop and ran into the rear of the Pontiac, causing it to burst into flames.
The Boone County coroner determined the women died from the impact of the crash mixed with the fire and smoke.
Scheben said the driver of the USF Holland tractor trailer, Ronnie York, 63 of Greenwood, Indiana, that crashed into the Grand Prix did not report any injuries. injuries. He was hauling "general freight."
