ERIE, PA : Interstate 90 westbound still closed by Pennsylvania crash on Thursday, December 8th 2016
The state Department of Transportation says a section of westbound Interstate 90 in northwestern Pennsylvania has reopened after a 15-vehicle pileup being blamed on lake-effect snow.
The crash closed the interstate in Erie County early Thursday afternoon. That’s when at least 15 people were hurt in chain reaction crashes near Girard, about 20 miles southwest of Erie.
The eastbound lanes reopened about midnight, but PennDOT Region 1 spokesman Jim Carroll says the westbound lanes didn’t reopen until after 9 a.m. Friday.
Most of the injuries were described as moderate. Police say the crash involved at least five tractor-trailers and multiple passenger vehicles.
The westbound lanes had been closed between Exit 9 in Girard and Exit 16 in Fairview.
A temporary 45 mph speed limit on I-90 has also been lifted.
