Memphis,TN : Officer-involved crash backs up I-40 for miles on August, Tuesday 22nd 2017
A Memphis police officer was among several drivers involved in a multi-car crash that sent cars swerving out of control on Interstate 40 just after 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The squad car and a silver SUV ended up in the median on I-40 near Canada Road.
"Just cars coming along at the speed of 65 miles per hour that just couldn't get stopped, so it was just a four car chain reaction," Lt. Cary Hopkins of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said.
The MPD officer was checked out at a nearby hospital but is expected to be OK.
The SUV driver went to the hospital in critical condition.
A driver and child in a mini-van were rear-ended but not injured.
An investigation into the crash took more than three hours, periodically shutting down traffic in both directions.
THP officials believe the crash could be related to the ongoing construction on Canada Road. They said it's so important to avoid distracted driving, especially in construction zones.
"When you drive, you have to devote all that attention to driving. You can't look off. You can't look away. Put the phone down and just drive," Hopkins said.
