Authorities identified Adrian Bocanegra as the Watsonville 8-year-old who died in a crash Wednesday on Hall Road in Monterey County.

Bocanegra's 35-year-old father was driving a 1996 Honda Civic with Bocanegra's 6-year-old brother also in the car, said CHP officer Oscar Loza. A 79-year-old Watsonville man was driving a Mercedes west on Hall Road near Las Lomas Road when he fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the double yellow line and struck the Honda, Loza said.

The 8-year-old, who was not in a child safety seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 6-year-old was taken to a hospital. The drivers were treated for minor injuries at the scene and did not require further medical attention, Loza said.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, Loza said. Loza said Thursday that the Mercedes driver was not arrested.

"If the investigating officer determines charges should be filed, he will recommended it in his report and forward the report to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office," Loza said.

Loza said the 8-year-old who died in the crash did not legally need to be in a child car seat.
