Aiken, SC : Rudy Mason Parkway in Aiken shut down due to major wreck on Saturday, December 17th 2016

Local and state police responded to the scene of a major collision late Saturday that shut down a portion of Rudy Mason Parkway.

It occurred just south of Wire Road, at Wrights Mill Road, around 7:24 p.m. Saturday. There were injuries with the collision, but the number and extent has not been confirmed.

At least two vehicles — a black car and a red pickup truck — were observed to be severely damaged at the intersection of the parkway and

Wrights Mill Road. Rudy Mason Parkway was shut down at Willow Run as crews tended to the scene.

Among those close enough to the the accident to hear the “boom” was Aiken resident Clay Killian, administrator of Aiken County’s government. He had been driving on the parkway from the vicinity of the Bi-Lo on the parkway, toward Wire Road.

“We had a deputy that was here, and I just had to stop for the deputy to come through the light, going after him,” Killian said, referring to a man who was reportedly driving the pickup truck.

“I heard the crash, and I just came up on the scene and realized it was really bad, so I thought I’d stop and see if I could help, but we had EMS here in less than five minutes.”

Units from the Aiken Department of Public Safety, Aiken County Sheriff ’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol responded.

A Highway Patrol public information officer was unavailable for comment as of late Saturday.
