If you are ever at Nampa High on a Tuesday or Thursday, you might see them with buckets and sponges in hand.
Dozens of students will work on detailing cars---scrubbing, washing and drying---until nearly every detail is perfect.
It's part of Nampa Prep---a program that helps give students with disabilities life and social skills to navigate adulthood. They learn skills such as car detailing, budgeting, how to give eye contact, and interact with others. They also run various businesses--making and selling dog treats, salsa, quilts and more. Students also get the opportunity to work at a nearby Stinker Gas Station and perform various tasks.
"We are giving them a natural environment out in the community to put those skills in place," said Jennifer Randolph, a teacher within the program. "So what that does is build their confidence. We're showing them that they have abilities, not just disabilities."
The program itself is completely self-sufficient, says Randolph. Aside from the instructors salaries--the entire program runs itself off of profits and donations. Students say the skills they learn are invaluable.
"How to cook, how to chop up some fruits, vegetables, meats and all that kind of stuff and you name it," said Lance Winsick, a student in the program.
