The National Weather Service says two tornadoes touched down in Coffee County on Tuesday night, injuring one person and damaging homes and businesses.Meteorologists conducted a site survey in Coffee County on Wednesday morning. They estimated wind speeds to be around 105 mph.
Many trees were knocked down there and a few dozen homes were damaged by fallen trees, according to the preliminary reports.
Some homeowners escaped with only minor damage.
“Nothing hit the house,” said Josh Clarey. “We got a hole in the garage, but other than that, we’re good to go. Just glad to be here.”
But others weren’t so lucky.
“It sounded like a large machine gun,” said Joni Allison.
Allison and her family took cover as soon as the warning came.
“We ran down to get into the hallway, so that was the safe zone, and it was just within minutes,” Allison said.
A tree came crashing down through their master bedroom. No one was in there at the time. Allison’s car was also crushed.
“We’re all OK,” she said. “We’re fine and we can replace everything else.”
The Associated Press reports that a husband and wife were killed in Polk County. At least two others were injured in Polk County and seven people were injured in McMinn County, according to the AP.
The National Weather Service says numerous tornadoes also hit Mississippi and Alabama. Three people were killed in northeastern Alabama as the storms rolled through.
Schools in Tullahoma were closed on Wednesday because of the damage the storms left behind. Strong winds toppled trees and power lines along Lakewood Drive. On Jackson Street, the roof of a McDonald's was partially blown off.
The National Weather Service says only one person has been reported injured in Coffee County from the storms when a tree landed on his car. He is expected to be OK.
