Lake Park, GA : Drivers killed in I-75 head-on collision on Tuesday morning, October 4, 2016

Troopers worked a series of vehicle collisions Tuesday morning that left two dead, others injured and closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 75.

The first wreck killed two people. A second collision occurred while traffic was stopped for the first wreck, said Georgia State Patrol Post 31 Cpl. Chris Kelch.

Shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday, a silver 2007 Lincoln MKZ was reportedly traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-75, according to reports from the GSP.

The vehicle was driven by Kurt McColley, 52, of Brooksville, Fla., Kelch said.

Judy Burress, 70, of Sweetwater, Tenn., traveled south, driving a white 2002 Ford Explorer; a blue 1994 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Bernardo Brito, 48, of Plant City, Fla., also traveled south, according to reports.

"The Lincoln struck the Explorer in the front end with the front end of the Lincoln," according to the GSP report. "The Silverado then struck the Explorer and traveled off the roadway.

"Mr. McColley and Ms. Burress were both pronounced deceased on scene. Mr. Brito sustained minor injuries to his chest."

Three other occupants — a woman and two children ages 14 and 9 — of Brito's vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Kelch said it is unknown why the Lincoln was traveling the wrong way.

"Troopers suspect that fatigue may have been a factor in this collision," Kelch said.

As traffic was stopped for this wreck, a second collision occurred at 5:41 a.m. Tuesday.

A 2016 Freightliner semi, driven by Randy Hines, 51, of Jacksonville, Fla., and a 2015 Chrysler 200, driven by Albert Booth, 54, of Quitman, were traveling south north of Exit 2, according to the GSP.

The Chrysler was behind the semi. As the semi slowed for stopped traffic, the Chrysler struck the rear of the Freightliner, according to the GSP.

Booth suffered minor injuries to his upper extremities; Hines suffered no injuries, according to the report.

Booth was cited for failing to use due care, according to the GSP.

The secondary collision further hampered traffic on I-75.

Southbound traffic was blocked for several hours.
