Norwood, MA : One dead, several injured in multiple-vehicle crash in Norwood on May 30, 2014

One person was killed and five others injured after a multi-vehicle crash that shut down part of Interstate 95 South in Norwood and caused a massive traffic backup during rush hour on Friday.

The accident began when two of the vehicles collided head-on after one crossed the grass median between the northbound and southbound lanes, said State Police spokesman David Procopio. State Police responded to the crash near Exit 11A/B Neponset Street at about 4:20 p.m.

Charles Iarrobino, 53, of Foxborough, was driving the northbound Range Rover that crossed the median, Procopio said. He suffered a minor injury and was taken to Norwood Hospital. It was not known why the car crossed the highway.

Also in the Range Rover was a 5-year-old boy who was taken Norwood Hospital for evaluation. His relationship with Iarrobino was not immediately clear.

Iarrobino’s vehicle collided with a Toyota Camry carrying three occupants — a 58–year-old woman and 62–year-old man from Foster, R.I., and a 28-year-old man from Providence. The woman was killed and the other occupants of that car, who suffered critical injuries, were airlifted by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center, State Police said.

After striking the Toyota, the Range Rover collided with a Ford Edge, causing minor injuries to its two occupants. The driver of the Ford, Nina Battista, 25, and her passenger Katlynn Landry, 25, both of Quincy, were also transported to Norwood Hospital.

The main lanes of the highway were closed following the crash, with a breakdown lane opened to traffic at around 6:30 p.m., State Police said. Troopers reopened all lanes at about 7:30 p.m.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
