Orlando, FL : Woman, dog killed in fiery, wrong-way crash on Beachline in Orange County on Thursday, Oct 1, 2015
A woman and dog were killed early Thursday in a fiery, wrong-way crash on the Beachline in Orange County, officials said.
The fatal crash happened around 2:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of State Road 528 near Dallas Boulevard.
Just before 9:30 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol reopened one westbound lane of S.R. 528 in the area. All lanes were reopened just before noon.
According to FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes, the woman was driving an SUV eastbound in the westbound lanes of S.R. 528 and struck an oncoming box truck head-on. The SUV and box truck then burst into flames, Montes said.
Mike Curtis, 26, of Melbourne, who was driving the box truck, tried to help the woman after the crash.
"When you have both vehicles engulfed in flames, there's not much you can do, especially when you see no movement. I couldn't go no further. I couldn't help," said Curtis, who was not seriously injured in the wreck.
The woman and a dog in the SUV died in the crash, troopers said.
Prior to the crash, a Cadillac swerved to miss the SUV and crashed into a barrier in the median of the highway, according to the FHP. Two Orlando women, ages 24 and 19, suffered minor injuries in the crash and were taken to Florida Hospital East, troopers said.
Wrong-way sensors were recently installed on State Road 528 at State Road 520 and also on State Road 408 at Hiawassee. The Central Florida Expressway Authority has approved funding for 30 additional sensors, which are expected to be installed in the next six months. No sensors, however, are currently located in the area of Thursday morning's crash, the FHP said.
