Charlotte, NC : Brown van being sought in deadly east Charlotte crash on Thursday night, October 27, 2016
Charlotte, North Carolina
A woman was killed after attempting to avoid hitting a merging vehicle and striking a tree in east Charlotte Thursday night. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they are searching for that merging vehicle, described as a brown work van.
The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. on Hickory Grove Road near Market Street.
Police say 68-year-old Jean Southerland Lennon was driving a 2002 Honda CRV when the van merged in front of her, causing Lennon to swerve, hit a curb and drive head-on into a tree.
Witnesses say the van was stopped in traffic in the left lane on Hickory Grove Road and pulled out into the right lane, in front of Lennon.
Medic took Lennon to Carolinas Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The van, with no known damage, was last seen traveling on Hickory Grove Road toward Pence Road.
Police say alcohol, speed and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash. Lennon was not wearing a seat belt, according to the police report.
