ENID, OK : 2 hurt in collision east of Enid on Wednesday, 5th October 2016
Two people were injured Wednesday before lunch in a two-vehicle collision at 42nd and U.S. 412, according to an Enid Police Department collision report.
Dana K. Stevens, 45, of Guthrie, was eastbound in the outside lane of U.S. 412 in a 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo when her vehicle was struck from behind, according to the report. Brian S. LeMasters, 44, of Milan, Kan., told police he thought he was eastbound in the outside lane of U.S. 412 in his 2006 Peterbilt 379 tanker truck but was not sure.
LeMasters said he looked to the Love's Travel Stop to the north and when he looked back up the Monte Carlo had stopped in the road, according to the report. He said he hit his brakes but was unable to stop and rear-ended the Chevy.
LeMasters said he thought he was going about 50 mph when he hit his brakes.
Stevens and her passenger, 22-year-old Randi Vaughn, of Enid, were extricated from the car by Enid Fire Department personnel and transported by Life EMS to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, according to the report. Stevens suffered non-incapacitating head, body and arm injuries. Vaughn suffered non-incapacitating head, internal body and arm injuries.
Stevens told police she stopped at the intersection because she thought she had a red light, according to the report. She said when she noticed LeMaster's truck was not slowing down she was unable to move in time to avoid getting rear-ended.
Following the collision, the Monte Carlo spun through the intersection and struck the curb for the center median of U.S. 412. The lights at the intersection were flashing yellow and do not change to red or green.
LeMasters, who was not injured, was cited for failure to devote full time and attention to driving.
The intersection has been the location of other accidents, and the city of Enid put in the traffic lights to help with the situation. Traffic on U.S. 412 has a flashing yellow light and may proceed with caution. Traffic on 42nd has flashing red and must stop.
