AUSTIN, TX : 1 teen girl killed, another hurt in Round Rock crash on Thursday, 21st February 2019
A 17-year-old Round Rock girl was killed and another injured in a crash Thursday evening after a truck driven by another young woman hit their car, according to a news release from Texas Highway Patrol.
Tonya Olsze and Alexia Scordelis, both 17 years old, were headed southbound in a Plymouth Neon on County Road 117 near Bluffstone Drive in Round Rock.
State troopers say Olsze, who was driving, tried to make a left turn on Bluffstone Drive in front of a Chevy Silverado driven by Jasmine Olguin, 19, of Austin. The truck struck the car on the passenger side.
Paramedics transported both Scordelis and Olsze to Seton Medical Center Williamson, where Scordelis died.
A memorial made of flowers and stuffed animals grew Friday, as classmates and friends of Scordelis' stopped by the crash site to remember her.
"Lexi was so pretty, and she had such a good heart," Sophia Cruz, a Stony Point High School junior, said while visiting the memorial. "She was such a good person. She's one of the best people I've ever met. She's very genuine, and she was so giving."
The Round Rock Independent School District confirmed Scordelis was a student at Stony Point High School.
"Additional crisis counselors are available at the campus today and will remain as long as needed," a school district spokesperson wrote in an email Friday to KXAN.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated, but it now may lead to changes at the intersection of County Road 117 and Bluffstone Drive.
A county spokesperson confirmed that the Williamson County engineer will reconsider making the intersection a four-way stop. Currently, drivers only have to stop on Bluffstone, but neighbors have long called for improvements.
"I'd like to see a speed bump at least on the road farther back," neighbor Rick Revisore said, "and at the intersection at least a stop sign."
In the past Williamson County found that a four-way stop was not needed after reviewing the amount of traffic and the crash history. However, the county engineer is now going to reassess because of the wreck that claimed Scordelis' life.
It's unclear how long it will take the county to check out this road again and determine if a four-way stop is now needed.
Olguin was medically cleared at the scene, state troopers said.
