Toledo, OH : Trooper hit on I-475 while responding to crash on Saturday, January 3, 2015

An Ohio trooper who was hit over the weekend on the side of the highway is recovering from a broken bone and a minor concussion.

The accident took place off of the northbound exit ramp of I-475 to U.S. 24 early Saturday morning. The trooper was responding to an accident and was hit by an another driver who lost control.

State patrol says the trooper is lucky to be alive after he was hit by a car and fell 30 feet over the guardrail. State patrol is citing the icy roads Saturday morning as the cause, saying the driver lost control and hit the trooper.

The trooper is expected to be out of the hospital Monday.

With the upcoming winter weather, state patrol says people need to slow down and move over.

“People need to slow down, and people need to change lanes for emergency personal, first responders, even worker drivers on the side of the road, it is the law, but we need it to happen to avoid situations like this," said Lt. William Bowers from the Toledo post. "We are very fortunate in how this turned out, it could have been a lot worse than it did."

The name of the trooper is being withheld at the request of his family. The accident is still under investigation.
