Sumter, SC : 12-year-old boy killed in an ATV crash in Sumter County on Sunday, April 17, 2016

The name of a 12-year-old boy killed in an ATV crash Sunday in Sumter County has been released.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Hunter Moore of Olanta was killed in the crash.

SCSO Public Information Officer Ken Bell said deputies responded to the 1100 block of Douglas Swamp Road around 3 p.m. to investigate the accident.

According to the incident report, Moore was riding an ATV across a field when it flipped several times and landed on top of him.

Moore was being taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle when a Florence County EMS unit caught up with them. The boy was then taken the rest of the way to the hospital in the ambulance but he stopped breathing and died before arriving.

"You know they get to riding these things and you see a bump and you think it would be good to jump it, but you don't realize, especially if you're a young child - 10, 11, 12 years old that you don't have the body weight to stay on the vehicle," Bell said. "A lot of times you get bounced off of it. You get thrown from the vehicle and then who knows where it's going."

Bell said Moore just celebrated his 12th birthday on April 12th.

Carolina Academy Assistant Principal Kenneth Bowen tells WIS he was in 6th grade at the Lake City school.

"You couldn't ask for a better boy, and he will truly be missed," he said.

Officers continue to investigate this accident.
