Grand Island, NE : Helmet may have prevented serious injuries to boy in car-bicycle accident on Sunday, 2nd October 2016
An accident between a car and a boy riding his bicycle seems to have the boy with no serious injuries, although he was transported by ambulance to CHI Health St. Francis for a check-up because of his young age.
The accident happened between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Officer Brian Houser of the Grand Island Police Department did not know the boy’s exact age, but estimated he could have been about 5 years old, which was the age initially reported on the police scanner. Houser said the accident happened when a car on Santa Anita Drive attempted to turn in a cul-de-sac, Saratoga Circle, as the boy was riding his bicycle from the cul-de-sac onto the street. Houser said a parked van obstructed the view of the car’s driver, helping to cause the accident.
Houser said the boy was wearing a bicycle helmet, which he believes likely prevented more serious injuries. “You can see scratches on the helmet where his head would have hit the pavement,” he said. Houser said the boy was conscious after the accident, but scared. Because of his young age, Houser said, the boy was transported to the CHI Health St. Francis to be checked by hospital staff.
Santa Anita Drive and Saratoga Circle are north of Stolley Park Road and east of South Locust Street.
