BERNE, NY : A Berne man was driving drunk and speeding when his pickup truck left the roadway on Saturday, June 17, 2017
A Berne man was driving drunk and speeding when his pickup truck left the roadway Saturday and ejected two passengers, who were hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.
Aaron Boomhower, the driver, was charged with misdemeanor DWI, aggravated vehicular assault, reckless driving, operating with a suspended registration and failure to keep right.
The crash occurred around 9:45 a.m. on Cole Hill Road in the town of Berne, said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple. Boomhower was driving south toward the town of Westerlo when he lost control of a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup near the intersection with Woodstock Road and grazed a tree. This caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and roll over before coming to a stop in a stand of trees in a cow pasture about 200 feet away.
"It tore the pickup truck apart," Apple said.
Boomhower wore a seat belt and remained in the truck, but his passengers — a 25-year-old Knox woman and a 30-year-old Berne man — were ejected.
All three were taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital. The woman sustained serious injuries and was in critical condition. She was expected to stay overnight Saturday.
Boomhower and the male passenger will also remain overnight in stable condition for minor injuries. Boomhower will be arraigned in the Town of Berne Court once released from the hospital.
An investigation remains underway.
