Simpson County, MS : 2-year-old Bella Titus dead when car hydroplanes and crashes into a tree on U.S.49 near Braxton on Wednesday, February 25, 2015
A 2-year-old girl died Wednesday when the car she was in hydroplaned and hit a tree near Braxton.
The crash happened about 11:35 a.m. on U.S. 49, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said.
Tammy Hogan, 41, was driving a 2010 Nissan Maxima when she hit some water and ran off the road, MHP said. The brunt of the impact was on the rear right area, where Bella Titus, 2, was sitting in her car seat. She died at the scene, MHP said.
Another passenger in the back seat, Triston Hogan, 14, was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, as was Tammy Hogan. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, MHP said.
Wednesday's rain played a factor in the crash, Trooper Eric Henry said.
"We continue to ask motorists to slow down or to avoid travel in this bad weather," Henry said. "We have had three fatal accidents in the past 24 hours in the Jackson District."
Henry urged drivers to allow plenty of time while traveling.
"Speed plays a major factor in raining and icy road conditions," he said.
