Six people were injured in a head-on crash on Highway 1, north of Arroyo De La Cruz, on Sunday evening, a news release from the CHP said.
About 6:20 p.m., Jacob Vita, 27, of Coronado was traveling south in a 2016 Mazda about 50 to 55 mph behind four vehicles. Vita drove into the northbound lane — crossing the double yellow lines — in an attempt to pass the cars, the news release said.
Meanwhile, a 2016 Ford with five women inside approached at nearly 55 mph in the northbound lane. The fronts of the cars collided when Vita entered the lane.
Vita suffered major injuries, including a broken left foot, broken right ankle and a head injury.
The driver of the Ford, Melekai Jenson, 32, of Haiku, Hawaii, suffered moderate injuries and complained of pain in her shoulder, back and neck.
Dior Coleman, 6, of Makawao, Hawaii, suffered major injuries with a nonlife-threatening head injury, pain to her right arm and leg and abdomen. Elyssa Polsky, 29, of Makawao, suffered fractures to her ribs, right leg. Amy Polsky, 50, of Haiku suffered left wrist and cervical fractures and broken ribs. Moana Jenson, 29, of Haiku suffered moderate injuries and complained of pain in her chest and back.
Everyone was wearing a seat belt. No arrests have been made; the investigation is ongoing.
