Northampton, MA : Two accidents delay traffic on Route 9 in Hadley on Friday September 2 2016

Two separate accidents which occurred minutes apart sent drivers to the hospital and slowed traffic Friday afternoon on Route 9.

At 2:30 p.m., Hadley police responded to a four-vehicle accident at the intersection of Russell Street and South Maple Street.

A 44-year-old Greenfield man drove his black Honda Civic over a curb near Trader Joe’s in the Hampshire Mall and across a lawn, before striking a hedge, a telephone pole, and three vehicles in traffic on South Maple Street, said Hadley Police Sgt. Kenneth Hartwright.

That driver was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital, and no one else involved in that accident reported injuries, Hartwright said.

Hartwright said the accident caused well over $1,000 in damage.

Charges are pending against the Greenfield driver, who police did not identify, Hartwright said.Roughly four minutes later, a car and motorcycle were involved in a collision at the South Maple Street entrance to the Hampshire Mall.

Hartwright said a 64-year-old Conway man on a motorcycle was hit by a vehicle operated by a 77-year-old Hadley woman. The motorcycle was turning left toward the mall when it was struck by the northbound vehicle on South Maple Street. Neither driver was identified by police.

The motorcyclist was also transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital with what Hartwright called “non-life threatening injuries.”

He said traffic in the area was already congested because of students moving into the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
