RENO COUNTY, KS : 1 hurt in construction accident in Reno County on Tuesday, 8th September, 2020
A 42-year-old man was injured after load of sheet pile fell on him in industrial accident.
The Reno County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that around 1:58 p.m. deputies, as well as fire and EMS, were dispatched to the bridge at 69th Ave. and Nickerson Rd., for a reported construction site injury.
Upon arrival deputies found 42-year-old Gonzalo Chavez, of Salina, lying on his back, injured. Deputies rendered aid to Chavez until EMS and fire arrived.
Deputies were informed that a crane operator with a 4,000 lbs load of sheet pile. The sheet pile was six feet off the ground when the operator accidentally took his foot off the crane brake which caused he load to fall.
Employees ran to where the load fell and that's when the operator realized he dropped the load on top of Gonzalo. The operator then lifted the load off Gonzalo while other employees rendered aid.
Gonzalo was later transported to the Hutchinson Airport by EMS and was flown to an area hospital for his injuries.
