Baker, CA : Man killed, another airlifted in a traffic collision on Interstate 15, south of Baker on Friday morning, July 15, 2016

A man was killed in a traffic collision on Interstate 15 just south of Baker on Friday morning, while another was airlifted to a trauma center in Las Vegas with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Another man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the collision at 2 a.m. involving a BMW and Acura on northbound I-15 south of Zzyzx Road, according to Sgt. Matt McKelvey.

The driver of the BMW was traveling at normal speeds and was rear ended by the Acura, which McKelvey said was traveling at a high speed. The impact forced the BMW into the center median and the Acura came to a rest in the No. 1 lane.

Shortly after, the driver of a tractor-trailer pulled off onto the shoulder to assist those involved in the collision, McKelvey said.

At approximately 2:14 a.m. a Toyota Camry collided with the tractor-trailer. The passenger of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene by San Bernardino County firefighters from the Baker Fire Station. The identity of the man killed is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his family. McKelvey said both the men inside the Camry are believed to be Hispanic men approximately 26 years old.
Fire officials said the driver of the Toyota suffered life-threatening injuries that required a request to transport to a local trauma center. The Baker station’s paramedic, along with Baker Ambulance, provided advanced life support while Mercy Air arrived at Baker Airport to transfer the man to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.

Authorities said both men were wearing seatbelts when the collision occurred.
The driver of the big rig was not injured.

Meanwhile, several occupants of the Acura were transported to Barstow Community Hospital with undisclosed injuries. McKelvey said there were not any reported injuries from the BMW.

Officers found the driver of the Acura to be under the influence and arrested him at the scene. McKelvey did not have the suspect’s name available Friday afternoon.
