Gratiot County, MI : Two dead in separate Gratiot County crashes on US-127 near VanBuren Road on Saturday, 4th January, 2020

Two people were killed - a 21-year-old Ithaca woman and a 62-year-old Bannister woman - in separate traffic crashes in Gratiot County on Saturday.

In the first crash, Autumn Mendoza or Ithaca was driving north on US-127 near VanBuren Road when her car left the roadway, went into the median, and hit a tree.

"Witnesses indicate the car was traveling fast at the time it left the roadway," Gratiot sheriff's officials said in a press release.


Both northbound lanes were closed for about two hours as officials investigated and cleared the accident, which happened just before noon.

Mendoza, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not wearing a seatbelt.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine if a medical condition contributed to the crash.
