RACINE, WI : A driver and a passenger were killed in a crash on Saturday, June 17, 2017
A driver and a passenger were killed in a crash on Saturday afternoon.
According to Racine Police, the car was driving south on Erie Street, near South Street, at a high rate of speed and the driver lost control before hitting a tree.
According to a news release, the driver and the passenger were in critical condition when first responders arrived on the scene. Both were transported by medical personnel, but later died as a result of their injuries.
Friends of the victims, who were driving in a van behind them, said they were heading to North Beach when their friends’ car — which was ahead of them — lost control, went into the oncoming lane and hit a tree.
“I tried to run over there as fast as I could and I couldn’t get a door open, I couldn’t do anything,” one friend said.
Witnesses said Racine firefighters had to cut open the car to get to the victims.
