Wanette,HI : Family, friends mourn death of 17-year-old Waianae teen hit by car on September, Friday 8th 2017

Family and friends are mourning the death of a Waianae teenager fatally hit by a car while crossing the street Friday night.

Police say it happened around 9:30 p.m. along Farrington Highway near Maliona Street.

Those camping overnight at Maili Beach Park say they saw Kailen Wong, 17, cross the highway with her headphones in.

The driver who hit her, a 47-year-old man, said he never saw her. He was traveling town-bound.

Witnesses say he stayed at the scene until paramedics arrived.

"He was actually shocked," said witness Janelle Kupukaa. "He looked scared he stayed by the car and he kept asking 'Is she alright? Is she alright?' He did not walk up to her at all."

Wong was taken to the hospital in critical condition where she later died.

Family says Wong lived in Waianae and was likely trying to get home when the accident occurred.

On Saturday, they built a roadside memorial with a wooden cross, 17 candles and photos of the Waianae High School graduate.

Her aunt says Wong had a bright future.

"She was a fun, loving kid and loved her anime," said Puna Cleaver, Wong's aunt. "She was just super spunky and always had a smile on her face. She's gone too soon."

The crash is under investigation but police say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.

This is the 30th traffic fatality on Oahu's roads in 2017 compared to 39 at the same time last year.
