Florida City , FL : Elderly couple injured and transported to hospital after Van Crash at Southwest Sixth Avenue on Friday morning ,February 13th 2015

A group of elderly people on their way to Leal Medical Center was injured in a crash in Florida City.

The crash occurred Friday morning at Southwest Fifth Street and Southwest Sixth Avenue.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Arnold Piedrahita said the driver of a medical transport van ran a stop sign and a Cadillac sport utility vehicle slammed into it.

"The transport van was broadsided," Piedrahita said. "It was hit right where the passengers were sitting."

Piedrahita said eight people were taken to area hospitals, four of them critically injured.

Neither of the drivers was seriously hurt. They were treated at the scene.

The driver of the van was cited by police.

"One thing is what they say, and another is who saw the truth," a marketing supervisor for Leal Medical Center told Local 10 News.

Steven Patterson, who lives in the area, said he doesn't believe the van driver should be blamed.

"They say the guy ran the stop sign, but that's not the case," he told Local 10. "The thing is that you've got to pull out all the way to the lane where the cars are coming this way, and that's what causes the accidents."
