Bogalusa, LA : Florida driver dies in wrong-way crash on La. highway early Sunday morning, September 11, 2016

Authorities said a driver from Florida was killed in a wrong-way head-on collision in Louisiana early Sunday morning that injured the other driver and a passenger in her car.

Louisiana State Police reported Daniel Elwood, 25, of Tallahassee, Florida, was killed in the crash. Troopers added Jodi Vasbinder, 17, of Covington, and Nathan Nicolasi, 19, were injured in the crash.

According to LSP, the crash happened on LA 21, about three miles south of Bogalusa, around 3 a.m. Officials noted that at the site of the crash, LA 21 is a four-lane highway divided by a grass median.

Tpr. Dustin Dwight with LSP said the investigation done so far showed Elwood was headed south in the northbound lane on LA 21 in a 2005 Hyundai Elantra. He added the car collided head-on with the 2005 Chrysler Sebring Vasbinder was driving north on LA 21.

According to Dwight, Elwood was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington Parish Coroner’s Office. Dwight also stated Vasbinder and Nicolasi were both properly buckled.

Investigators said Vasbinder was flown by helicopter to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond with moderate injuries. They reported Nicolasi was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Angels Hospital in Bogalusa with minor injuries.

Troopers said they don’t think Vasbinder was impaired at the time of the crash and that she voluntarily gave them a blood sample. They added blood samples were also taken from Elwood and all of the samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This is normal procedure for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways.

The investigation is ongoing.
