Atlanta, GA: Gdot Hero worker hit by car, critically injured on Saturday, August 1st 2015
An emergency worker remains in critical condition after police said he was struck by a car while responding to an accident early Saturday morning.According to Atlanta Police, the Georgia Department of Transportation HERO worker had arrived on the scene of a tractor trailer crash on the downtown connector around 1:30 a.m. As he was putting down flares, a driver struck him. Emergency responders transported the GDOT employee to Grady hospital. The driver, a 25-year-old female, was arrested at the scene and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and failure to obey the move over law. That statute requires drivers to either slow down or move over to give emergency workers one lane of space while they work on the roadway."I can't stress that enough," said Atlanta Police Capt. Terrell Griffin. "In order for us to do our job and for them to do theirs, we need for oncoming traffic to slow down or move over. If that had happened in this case, we wouldn't be here." Investigators have not released the names of the driver nor the injured HERO worker.
