Concord, MN : Fatal bicycle crash investigated on North State Street in Concord on Thursday, 6th September 2018

A bicyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon in a crash that one witness said was caused by an out-of-control van on North State Street in Concord.

A section of the road was expected to be closed for several hours as police investigated the crash and spoke to witnesses, including Joseph Noonan, who told the Monitor he saw a swerving van strike the bicycle and then another vehicle.

Noonan, who works in Concord, said the bicyclist was traveling on North State Street toward Penacook when it veered a bit out of its designated lane to pass a UPS truck that was parked to make a delivery. As Noonan slowed down in anticipation of approaching the area, he said he witnessed the van in front of him nearly side-swipe the UPS truck and jump a bit into the air as if it had hit a “speed bump.”

“I thought to myself, ‘Oh no, there’s no way,’ ” Noonan recalled, as he described seeing the mangled bike resurface several feet away from under the van.

Noonan said a man was lying in the road with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. First responders, who were on the scene within minutes, transported the victim to the hospital, he said.
