Jacksonville, FL : Jacksonville woman killed in Westside crash on Sunday, November 27th 2016

A 54-year-old Jacksonville woman was killed Sunday night when her car was hit on Normandy Boulevard at the Chaffee Road intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Velvet Guy Lynn Griffin had the green light as she drove west on Normandy Boulevard at 5 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol. But a Ford Explorer driven by 21-year-old David Mertil went through the red light as it headed south on Chaffee and hit the left side of Griffin’s Hyundai Accent in the intersection.

The Explorer came to rest blocking the intersection, while the Hyundai ended up in the grass median.

Mertil was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.

The Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation
