Ames, IA : 38-year-old mother and her 7-year-old son injured when a wheel crashed through the windshield of their vehicle on US-30 near the State Avenue Bridge on Tuesday morning, April 19, 2016

A Nevada woman and her 7-year-old son were injured in a freak accident when a tire from pickup truck came off and crashed into their windshield.

Ames police said the accident happened Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 30 near the State Avenue bridge in Ames.

The wheel fell off the front driver’s side of a pickup truck driven by Kathy Pike, 28, of Boone, as she was driving eastbound on U.S. 30. The wheel bounced and rolled through the median before crashing into the windshield of a westbound car driven by Alison Evans, 38, of Nevada.

Evans suffered cut on her head, and her 7-year-old son, suffered a minor injury to an eye, Ames police Cmdr. Jason Tuttle said. Both were taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center for treatment. An infant buckled in the back seat of the car wasn’t hurt.

Pike also wasn’t injured, Tuttle said.

“It was such a fluke thing that it hit the windshield in just the right spot. It easily could have become more extreme,” Tuttle said.
