LIVINGSTON, IL : 1 juvenile dead, 3 children injured in I-55 multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday, 11th November, 2020
The Illinois State Police released more information Wednesday about a child fatality and two injured in a multiple-vehicle crash Nov. 10 on Interstate 55 at Livingston.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a 2008 gray Chevrolet Malibu, Laura D. Schmittling, 27, of Collinsville, was traveling on I-55 southbound at milepost 37, just north of the New Douglas Road exit. For unknown reasons, the car ran off the roadway to the left and struck a guardrail. After striking the guardrail, the Malibu became disabled in the left lane.
Driver Travis G. Michaels, 35, of Hazleton, Iowa, in a 2003 red Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer, also traveling at the same location, swerved to avoid Schmittling and sideswiped another vehicle, a 2009 silver Ford Focus, driven by Lacy A. Weiser, 23, of Highland, traveling in the adjacent lane. And yet another vehicle, a 2018 white International truck tractor semi-trailer driven by Benjamin M. Brunoehler, 27, of Sandwich, became involved, striking the disabled Chevy Malibu. An 8-year-old child from Collinsville, a passenger in the Malibu, was pronounced dead. Another child passenger, age 2, also of Collinsville, was transported to a local area hospital with injuries.
