Sioux Falls, SD : Man seriously injured in semi vs. car crash on South Dakota Highway 42 on Tuesday afternoon, August 30, 2016

A 57-year-old man has life-threatening injuries after a semi rear-ended his car Tuesday afternoon.

The man, driving a 2004 Toyota Rav 4, was at a complete stop westbound on South Dakota Highway 42. He was reared by the semi traveling the same direction, pushing the Rav into the ditch, according to South Dakota Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Mangan.

The accident occurred just before 1 p.m. east of Rowena and traffic was diverted for about two hours.

The man driving the Toyota was taken to Avera Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the semi, 30, was not injured and was wearing a seat belt. Charges are pending.

Neither name is being released pending notification of the victim's family.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
